Ebola Detection with SATIR Thermal Imaging

SATIR Thermal Imaging in the Fight against Ebola

In recent weeks, the Ebola virus has been making headlines on the news and in media reports, that it is causing a large loss of life on the African Continent. Many of us will remember the worst outbreak of Ebola in 2013 which saw the deaths of 11,300 people where there was 29,000 registered according to the world health organisation (WHO). The latest outbreak of the Ebola virus was first reported in August 2018 in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

About the Ebola Virus

The Ebola virus was first discovered in 1976 by a microbiology team in the DRC. It is a virus that is transmitted from wild animals particularly bats to humans. It is a highly contagious and can spread quickly to humans through close contact of bodily fluids of an infected person. This makes the virus very difficult to contain in an area. Symptoms of the virus include high fever, diarrhoea, vomiting and bleeding. According to WHO the mortality rate for Ebola is high “The average EVD case fatality rate is around 50%. Case fatality rates have varied from 25% to 90% in past outbreaks.” Currently there is no known cure for the Ebola Virus apart from some experimental vaccines and drug therapies.

How SATIR Thermal Imaging Cameras are being used in the fight against Ebola?

SATIR thermal imaging cameras are now being used in the fight against the Ebola virus. We often hear the old saying ‘Prevention is Better than a Cure’, SATIR thermal camera units are currently being fitted on border checkpoints to monitor people passing through these checkpoints for a high Temperature which is a key symptom of the virus.  SATIR fixed thermal units have been installed in border check points in an African country that sees up to 20,000 people passing through just one of these border check points. If an individual is detected to having a high temperature they are then pulled aside for further testing to see if they test positive for the Ebola virus. SATIR thermal imaging cameras are being used as a preventative technique to try and stop the spread of this deadly virus which has claimed so many lives in 2013.
